Monthly flea and tick prevention pills are the most commonly recommended product for dog owners. They tend to be more expensive than monthly topical applications but they come with the added benefit of preventing many types of worms, including the fatal heartworm. Unlike the liquid application, pills do not wash away from the coat- eliminating the need for multiple monthly doses. Before starting any type of pill, your veterinarian should perform a heartworm test to ensure your dog is healthy enough to start the monthly medication.
Topical applications of a flea and tick prevention medication can be recommended for dogs who have certain health issues that prevent them from taking a pill. They are also suitable for use in areas where heartworm is unlikely. Topical solutions are cheaper than the pill and do not require any veterinarian testing before starting. Your dog will need to bathe less often, usually once a month before application. If your dog is exposed to water for any length of time, you will need to reapply more often- eliminating the cost savings over the pill. Topical applications intended for dogs are toxic to cats, so the pill is safer in homes with both.
