Dogs love the great outdoors but no one loves the insect bites that accompany them. From flies to mosquitoes and all biting insects in between, repellent sprays help protect your dog from being bit. Use repellent sprays when camping, grilling or even just taking a walk in the evening. Repellant formulas come in  two forms, either spray or cream. There are also antibiotic treatments if your dog has already been bitten.

Mosquito bites are the primary cause of heartworm in dogs. While monthly prevention medications can stop heartworm from growing, repellent sprays can spare your dog getting bit in the first place. Let’s face it, mosquito bites are itchy and can become infected- avoiding the bite will ensure your dog does not suffer discomfort.

Besides heartworm, mosquitoes carry a variety of other diseases including West Nile Virus and the Zika Virus. Repellent sprays are highly recommended for dogs who play outdoors often and can be reapplied throughout the day as indicated on the bottle.

If your dog has already felt the bite from an insect, help to soothe the wound with an antibacterial ointment. There are a few varieties, some providing a numbing or cooling effect, giving instant relief to itchy bite wounds. Reapply as directed to prevent infection and heal quickly.

If you are using a monthly flea and tick prevention medication on your dog, make sure to check with your veterinarian before using a repellent spray.
